Sambalpur: From Convenience to Chaos; How GM-Khetrajpur Station Bypass Road Issues Are Hurting Locals
Sambalpur: The road connecting GM University to Khetrajpur Junction is in bad condition. Large potholes have formed along the route, and some sections are filled with mud, while others are littered with construction materials. This has made the road nearly inaccessible. Despite multiple complaints, no repairs or maintenance have been performed. The road’s condition deteriorated further during the rainy season, increasing demand for its immediate reconstruction.
Samir Sahu, a Budharaja resident, stated that this road is an important and convenient route to Khetrajpur Junction. Thousands of people use it every day to get to the railway station and other destinations such as Stationpada, Danipali, and Thakurpada. However, the road has been in disrepair for months. Ongoing railway track work has resulted in heavy vehicles frequenting the road, causing additional damage. Despite this, the railway authorities have taken no action, causing increasing dissatisfaction among residents. Recently, a Sambalpur resident took to social media to demand immediate repairs.

Foot Overbridge Demolition Increases Travel Distance
In addition to the road issues, the demolition of the old foot overbridge that connects the communities on either side of the railway line has caused significant disruption. Residents of Budharaja and the Charchika Chhak area must now travel an additional kilometer, wasting approximately 30 minutes. Many pedestrians, both students and locals, are now forced to cross the railway tracks in dangerous conditions. Budharaja and Gopalmal are home to the majority of GM University students, as well as competitive exam candidates. With all coaching centers located near Charchika Chhak, students are forced to cross the railway tracks, putting their lives in danger.
Residents who live in Gopalmal but own businesses in Charchika Chhak face similar difficulties. Due to the lack of a foot overbridge, a 10-meter distance has become a one-kilometer journey.
Railway Authorities Respond
In response, the Sambalpur railway authorities stated that road repairs were postponed due to ongoing construction. They assured that the road would be rebuilt soon. Regarding the foot overbridge, the railway authorities announced plans to build a new one as soon as possible.
