Sambalpur: GM Higher Secondary School in Disrepair; Crumbling Ceilings Endanger Students
Lack of Own Building: Education Continues in GM University Premises
Sambalpur: The once-prestigious Gangadhar Meher Higher Secondary School is in disrepair, with collapsed ceilings endangering students. The school, which was once a source of pride for the community, is currently experiencing severe space and infrastructure constraints.
Overcrowded Classrooms and Inadequate Facilities
With 2,230 students, the school has only 11 classrooms, many of which are deteriorating. Crumbling concrete from the ceilings poses a constant threat to the students, and during the rainy season, water seeps through the walls, exacerbating the problem. These conditions pose significant challenges for both students and teachers.

Students and Staff Express Concerns
Rajesh Sahu, a student, expressed his concern, saying that going to school has become dangerous, with falling debris injuring students in the past. Sonakshi Bhoy, another student, stated that the poor conditions make it difficult to concentrate on studies. The lack of a proper laboratory and space for practical sessions has also been a significant issue, particularly for science and commerce students.
Desperate Need for a New Building
The school administration has struggled to accommodate all students with only four laboratories available for practical sessions. The principal emphasized the urgent need for a new building, pointing out that the current arrangement on the GM University campus needs to be revised. The administration has identified 2.5 acres of land in Professor Colony and has asked the district administration for an additional 5.7 acres to build classrooms, hostels, and playgrounds.
Government and Local Authorities Involved
Local authorities have taken note of the situation, with the District Infrastructure Separation Committee, chaired by the District Collector, recommending the allocation of additional land. However, the proposed land is currently under the jurisdiction of the Devasthan Department and the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation. The Revenue Minister has been notified, and it is hoped that the school will soon have its own land and building, as promised by authorities.
