Sambalpur: GMU Students’ Lives at Risk; Cross Railway Tracks by Climbing Over Trains, Urgent Call for Safety Measures

Sambalpur: Students of Gangadhar Meher University are reportedly risking their lives by crossing railway tracks in a dangerous manner. Many students, especially those residing in nearby areas like Gopalmal, Shantinagar, and Budharaja, often take the risky route due to a lack of proper infrastructure.

Train Crossing Turns Hazardous

Recently, students were seen climbing over a stationary freight train to cross the tracks. Due to signal delays, the train came to a halt near a railway gate, and students took this dangerous shortcut in order to save time.

Regular Sight of Dangerous Behavior

Such risky behavior has become a daily occurrence as several freight trains halt at the gates for extended periods. During this time, students often climb over or dangerously cross the tracks, oblivious to the imminent risks. If the train moves unexpectedly, it could lead to fatal accidents.

Long-Standing Demand for Safe Crossing Infrastructure

The absence of a foot overbridge or pedestrian path has been a major concern. Local residents and students have been demanding these facilities for a long time. However, the railway authorities have not yet addressed this issue, forcing students to take unsafe routes daily.

Authorities’ Inaction Sparks Outrage

Despite the repeated risks and growing concerns, neither the university administration nor the railway authorities have taken any concrete steps to resolve the matter. This lack of action has sparked widespread discontent among the community.

Call for Immediate Action

Students and concerned citizens are urging the authorities to take swift measures, such as constructing a pedestrian bridge or a footpath, to prevent further risks to students’ lives. Immediate intervention is necessary to ensure the safety of all commuters.
