Sambalpur: Heavy Rainfall in Upper Catchment; Hirakud Reservoir Gates to Open on July 28
Sambalpur: Due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment of the Mahanadi, the water level of the Hirakud Reservoir is rising. For the first time this monsoon season, the inflow into the reservoir has exceeded one lakh cusecs. As of 9 AM today, the inflow is 1,72,056 cusecs per second, causing the water level to rise to 604.91 feet. To release the excess floodwater, the gates of the Hirakud Reservoir will be opened on July 28 at 9 AM.

Chief Engineer Sushil Kumar Behera provided this information. This will be the first floodwater release of the year, according to the Hirakud Dam authorities. A warning has been issued to the lower Mahanadi districts regarding this release, the Chief Engineer added. Last year, the gates were opened on July 23.
