Sambalpur: Helmet-Wearing Thieves Strike Again, Woman’s Gold Chain Snatched From Her Back in Broad Daylight

Woman’s Chain Snatched from Her Back

Sambalpur: In a style reminiscent of movies, thieves are striking before people can even realize what’s happening. They snatch valuables and flee instantly. Recently, a gang of bikers had caused trouble in Sambalpur city by stealing gold, money, and mobile phones from people. Though police checks and blockades had temporarily reduced their activities, they seem to have become active once again.

Recent Incident

Today, two thieves on a bike stole a gold chain from a woman’s back near Eidgaha Padia, under Dhanupali police station limits. The two culprits, moving at high speed, approached the woman and quickly stole her gold chain before fleeing the scene. After the incident, the woman lodged a formal complaint, and the police registered a case and began investigating the matter.

Details of the Victim

According to the report, a woman from Kureitula was on her way to deposit money at a bank in Sakhipada. After completing her deposit, between 3:30 and 4:00 PM, while returning home, two thieves on a bike wearing helmets spotted an opportunity near Eidgaha Padia and stole the chain from her back. Before anyone could react, they sped away from the scene. Dhanupali police responded to the information and are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas.

Increase in Crime and Police Response

The city is seeing an increase in theft, snatching, stabbings, and illegal activities involving drugs such as Corex, brown sugar, and alcohol. Despite police efforts, some argue that they are failing to control these criminal activities.

Police Measures

At the beginning of the year, Sambalpur police had planned to take strict actions against thieves and looters. They set up help centers at key junctions in the city and installed CCTV cameras in prominent locations. These measures have made criminals avoid certain routes. However, they are now committing crimes in back alleys, making it difficult for police to catch them.

Past Incidents

In January, a similar incident occurred near the Mudipada water tank junction. A couple from Dhuchurapada was returning home on a scooter from a family event in Jharuapada. Between 4:00 to 5:00 PM, as they were passing through Mudipada, a thief snatched a chain from the woman’s back. Additionally, in June, a woman and her mother-in-law from the Badabajar area, under Khetrajpur police station, were returning home after purchasing gold from a jewelry shop near Ashoka Talkies. The thief snatched their jewelry. In many of these cases, the culprits wear helmets, making it difficult for the police to identify and catch them.
