Sambalpur: Illegal Constructions on Drains to be Removed in Sambalpur; Steps Taken on Dhanupali-Huma Road
Sambalpur: The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation has taken steps to remove all illegal drain constructions under its jurisdiction. The process is currently underway on the Dhanupali-Huma road, with the removal of unauthorized structures and drain encroachments. Deputy Commissioner Shankar Sahu informed that this initiative will be implemented across all areas of the Municipal Corporation.
Encroachments on drains have become a common problem in the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation area, resulting in improper drain cleaning. This causes major issues for city residents, particularly during the rainy season.
Municipal Corporation’s City-Wide Initiative
The Municipal Corporation has already begun taking steps to improve the city’s disorganized drainage system. A master plan and DPR for the drainage system are being developed, and tenders have been issued. After selecting an agency, a master plan will be created, focusing on the current state of the drains, land status, required drain sizes and types, and new drain constructions.

Drain and sewage management are major issues in the city, making it difficult to dispose of rainwater and wastewater from homes. Water from drains frequently flows into the streets in various parts of the city. Flooding caused by backwater, not river overflow, has become a common occurrence in Sambalpur during the rainy season.
Steps Welcomed by Intellectual Community
The Municipal Corporation’s actions have been welcomed by the intellectual community. The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation is divided into 41 wards, which include several prominent areas as well as numerous small and large slums. There are 548 kilometers of drain networks to handle wastewater from all of these areas.
During the monsoon season, the Municipal Corporation focuses on cleaning drains. However, many drains are too small to clean with machines. Regular drain cleaning by workers is also insufficient. Many areas of the city have encroachments or houses built over drains. The Municipal Corporation’s actions have been welcomed by the intellectual community.
