Indian Youth Becoming Obese: Economic Survey Highlights Concern

According to the Economic Survey of 2024, obesity is becoming a significant concern among Indian youth.

Survey Findings

According to the National Family Health Survey, 2019-2021, which assesses the health of India’s population, the obesity rate among youth and adults in India has more than tripled. According to the Global Obesity Federation, India, after Vietnam and Namibia, has the highest annual number of obese children in the world.

Importance of Addressing the Issue

If India wants to capitalize on its demographic advantage, its population must consume a balanced and diverse diet to ensure their health.

Report Insights

According to the survey report, the Indian Council of Medical Research estimates that unhealthy eating habits contribute to 56.4% of India’s disease burden in its April 2024 dietary guidelines for Indians.

Contributing Factors

The report attributes the rise in obesity and micronutrient deficiencies to increased consumption of highly processed foods high in sugar and fat, a lack of physical activity, and a scarcity of various nutritious foods.
