Sambalpur: Amrit Dhara Turns into an Advertisement Hub; People Struggle for Drinking Water in Intense Heat

Extreme Heat and Water Shortage

Sambalpur: Burla is experiencing intense heat due to the summer season. By noon, the streets become deserted as people avoid going out. However, despite the scorching weather, there is no proper arrangement for drinking water in major city squares. People struggle to find clean and cold drinking water, facing significant inconvenience.

Defunct Amrit Dhara Turns into an Advertisement Board

One such essential water facility, the Amrit Dhara at Thana Chowk, was meant to provide clean drinking water to the public. Unfortunately, it has remained non-functional for years. Instead of serving thirsty citizens, its walls are now covered with advertisements, making it nothing more than a promotional space.

No Drinking Water Stalls in Burla

As the summer heat intensifies, not even a single temporary drinking water stall (Jalachhatra) has been set up in the city. Moreover, authorities have failed to repair and reactivate non-functional Amrit Dhara and Amrit Ganga water stations across different locations.

Growing Dependency on Bottled Water

Every day, thousands of people from different districts visit Burla for work or business. Without public water facilities, they have no choice but to buy bottled water, increasing their expenses. If the existing water sources were properly maintained, locals and visitors could easily get free cold water.

Public Frustration and Administrative Neglect

Thana Chowk and Petrol Pump Chowk, where public water facilities exist, witness a heavy footfall. These spots provide shelter from the heat, and people often gather there while waiting for buses or completing errands. However, the Amrit Dhara at these locations is completely neglected. Instead of serving water, the walls are now covered with posters and advertisements.

Locals have expressed their frustration, accusing district and SMC authorities of ignoring the issue. Despite repeated complaints, no action has been taken to restore the drinking water facilities.

Public Demand for Immediate Action

As the water crisis worsens, residents demand immediate repairs of the non-functional water stations. If authorities take prompt action, people can have access to free cold water during the unbearable summer heat. The issue has now become a major topic of discussion in the city.
