Sambalpur: Major Stock Market Scam; Police Fail to Nab a Single Cyber Fraudster in 6 Months
Challenges in Handling Cybercrime Cases
Sambalpur: In the last six months, Sambalpur Police have not managed to arrest a single cyber fraudster. The cyber police station faces severe challenges due to a lack of manpower, outdated equipment, and insufficient funds. Officers without proper technical expertise are assigned to cybercrime cases, which hampers investigations.
Cybercriminals Stay Ahead of The Police
Cybercriminals are using advanced techniques to commit fraud. They regularly change their methods and steal money from victims’ bank accounts, credit cards, and UPI wallets. Many victims lose large sums of money within moments, even without sharing OTPs. Highly educated individuals are also falling prey to these scams.

Recent Cyber Fraud Incidents in Sambalpur
Two significant cyber fraud incidents in Sambalpur have underscored the escalating problem of online scams. Kiran Bala Acharya, a resident of Dhanupali, suffered a loss of over Rs. 31.74 lakh after being contacted by fraudsters via WhatsApp. They convinced her to invest in the stock market, and through multiple transactions, her money disappeared from her account. Similarly, Vijay Kumar Pradhan from Ainthapali fell prey to a comparable scam, losing Rs. 20.45 lakh. Fraudsters deceived him with promises of lucrative stock market investments. Despite both victims filing complaints at the cyber police station, the authorities have neither made any arrests nor recovered the stolen money.
Public Criticism of Police Leadership
Residents blame senior officers, including SP Mukesh Bhamu and Burla SDPO Ambit Mohanty, for their lack of focus on cybercrime. They believe the absence of dedicated efforts has allowed fraudsters to continue operating without fear. Despite awareness campaigns by the police, their effectiveness remains questionable.
Inadequate Resources and Skills
The Sambalpur cyber police lack skilled personnel and advanced tools to counter the sophisticated tactics of cybercriminals. Officers with expertise have been transferred to other stations, leaving the cyber police ill-equipped. This lack of resources makes it difficult to trace and apprehend criminals.
Urgent Need for Action
Victims are still waiting for justice, as the police struggle to arrest the fraudsters or recover stolen money. This situation raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing cybercrime. Without immediate action and better resources, cybercriminals will continue to exploit the system and victimize unsuspecting individuals.
