Sambalpur: Market Complexes Encroach Roads During Festivals; SMC Conducts Raids, Vishal Mega Mart Fined, Sreeleathers Warned
Sambalpur: The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) fined Vishal Mart, located in Ainthapali, Rs 4,000 for causing traffic problems. According to SMC enforcement officer Sushant Sahu, shoppers have been parking their vehicles on the main road rather than in the designated parking area, causing serious traffic issues, particularly during the holidays. Along with Vishal Mart, the SMC has issued warnings to Shri Leather for the same reasons. The shop has been instructed to manage its customers’ parking or face fines properly, and in extreme cases, the shop may be shut down.
Traffic Issues Worsen During Festivals
As the festive season approaches, traffic in Sambalpur worsens. These issues are primarily caused by market complexes and shops located near major roads. Many of these businesses are illegally expanding into the streets, while larger stores and market complexes are failing to provide adequate parking for their customers. As a result, customers are forced to park their vehicles on the road, further reducing traffic capacity.

Despite having its own parking lot, Vishal Mart failed to manage it effectively, resulting in congestion. During the holiday season, the number of vehicles and shoppers has increased, worsening the situation. Instead of helping to alleviate traffic problems, shop owners neglect their social responsibilities, resulting in chaos on the roads.
SMC Takes Action
To address these issues, the SMC is now conducting inspections of shops and businesses that encroach on public roads. Shop owners who cause traffic congestion will face fines and, if necessary, their businesses may be temporarily closed as a warning. The SMC has emphasized the importance of shopkeepers playing their part in reducing traffic congestion during peak periods such as festivals.
