Sambalpur: Menace of Drug Addicts Increasing in Sambalpur; Student Returning from Tuition Becomes Victim of Robbery

Increase in Criminal Activities by Addicts

Sambalpur: Sambalpur city is witnessing a rise in criminal activities by drug addicts. Many of them, especially those addicted to cough syrup, are committing crimes to arrange money for their addiction.

Recently, a student fell victim to such a crime. On Sunday night, around 8 PM, while returning home from tuition, he was attacked near Deer Park under Dhanupali police station. Three young men stopped him and tried to snatch his mobile phone. When the student resisted, they first beat him and threatened him. Later, they injured his face with a knife and looted his mobile phone and Rs. 500 before fleeing.

Police Case Registered

The injured student received medical treatment and later filed a complaint at Dhanupali police station. However, this is not an isolated incident. Such crimes by addicts have become common in Sambalpur, with cases of looting happening almost every day.

Why Addicts Resort to Crime

According to police sources, many addicts form groups while consuming cough syrup or other intoxicants. When they run out of money, they start planning crimes. Late at night, they target people, threaten them, and demand money. If someone refuses to give money or resists, they resort to violence, even using knives.

Concerns About Police Patrolling

Local residents are questioning the effectiveness of police patrolling. Many people, especially those returning home late from work or train stations, are becoming victims of looting.

Recent Incidents of Theft

A few days ago, a gang of addicts committed theft in the Ainthapali police station area. They broke into two houses, stealing valuables, electrical appliances, and gold ornaments. These criminals monitor houses beforehand and strike when no one is home.

Public Demand for Action

The people of Sambalpur are demanding strict action against illegal drug activities and proper measures to free the city from crime caused by drug addiction.
