Traffic and Encroachment Worsen Daily Problems
Sambalpur: Sambalpur city is struggling with daily issues such as illegal encroachments, narrow roads, and severe traffic congestion. In addition to these problems, the poor management of the power department has worsened the situation. Due to the department’s negligence, the traffic issues remain unresolved. The unorganized placement of electric poles and hanging wires has made road expansion impossible, increasing the risk of accidents at any moment.
Major Traffic Jams at Key City Intersections
The roads between GM University Chowk and Mudipada Chowk and from Laxmi Talkies Chowk to District School Chowk remain congested throughout the day. The power department plays a major role in this issue. Previously, electric poles and wires were in the middle of VSS Marg, but they were later shifted to the roadside. However, on the stretch from Laxmi Talkies Chowk to District School Chowk, power connections for hotels, business establishments, banks, the municipality, and the SDA market complex have been poorly managed. The authorities moved the poles and wires to the roadside but ignored the safety concerns of the residents.
Electric Poles and Wires Pose a Constant Danger
In many areas, electric poles have been carelessly placed too close to buildings and roads. The wires are left hanging dangerously overhead, creating a life-threatening hazard. Instead of removing illegal encroachments, the authorities have placed the poles in a way that benefits the encroachers, preventing road widening. No one is willing to take responsibility for this issue.

Electric Poles Block Key Entry Roads
The GM University Chowk to Mudipada Chowk road is one of the main entry points into the city. Despite road expansion in some areas, electric poles are still in the middle of the road. Because of the power department’s lack of cooperation, the plan to widen roads and ease traffic congestion has completely failed. Encroachers have taken advantage of these misplaced poles, further worsening the problem. The risk of accidents due to these poles and wires remains high.
Frequent Power Cuts Without Real Improvements
The power department claims to conduct regular maintenance for better electricity services. However, despite frequent power cuts in the name of maintenance, residents have seen no visible improvements. People are now losing hope, believing that expecting action from the power department is pointless.
Citizens Demand Immediate Action
Before a major accident occurs, residents are demanding urgent action to improve road safety. They want electric poles to be shifted away from roads, overhead electric wires to be properly arranged, and illegal encroachments to be removed. Despite these pressing concerns, the concerned authorities have not yet responded to the issue.
