Sambalpur: No Elections, Growing Corruption; The State of Sambalpur Municipal Corporation After 11 Years
Sambalpur: Sambalpur was declared a municipal corporation 11 years ago, but no elections have been held since. During this time, several officials have held positions for years. This situation has resulted in allegations of increased corruption within the municipal corporation.
Allegations of Corruption
According to complaints, the lack of municipal elections has resulted in complete control by officials. Despite numerous complaints, residents have not seen any positive results. As a result, the public’s problems and difficulties are becoming more severe, according to Surya Panigrahi and Deo Kiran Pattnaik of the social organization ‘Saksham’.
Long-Standing Officials and Corruption
Complaints indicate that many officials have been with the municipal corporation for more than a decade. Despite this, no transfers have occurred for key departments such as engineering, administration, or accounting. This has led to an increase in corruption across various operations.

Demands for Change
‘Saksham’ has demanded the transfer of officials and employees who have served in critical departments for more than five years. Furthermore, the municipal corporation has not appointed the necessary number of officials and employees, particularly in the engineering department, where numerous positions remain vacant. This has hampered the proper completion of construction work, resulting in substandard quality.
Neglect in Public Works
Many roads that were tendered years ago have yet to begin construction. Despite the municipal corporation’s annual spending of crores on development projects to create a clean and beautiful Sambalpur, basic amenities such as proper drainage systems have yet to be established. Cleanliness concerns persist, and many public grievances remain unresolved.
Call for Action
In light of these issues, the organization has called for immediate action to replace long-term employees with new ones, as well as to fill the positions required to ensure the municipal corporation’s effective operation. The goal is to combat corruption while also improving Sambalpur residents’ quality of life.
