Sambalpur: Nurses’ Strike at DHH Hospital, Crowded OPD, Empty Beds

Sambalpur: Patients in the emergency and OPD departments face long lines due to the ongoing nurses’ strike at Sambalpur Sadar Hospital, but the hospital’s beds are still empty. Currently, 28 patients are in the general ward, 6 in surgery, 1 in orthopedics, 4 in the SNCU, and a few in gynecology. Most patients receive primary care and are discharged, while serious cases are referred to Burla Hospital.

Despite the ongoing nurses’ strike, the hospital administration has assured that steps are being taken to maintain patient care.

Nurses’ Strike Continues

Sambalpur Sadar Hospital’s 65 staff nurses are on strike. They are protesting because the government has failed to fulfill their demands. As a result, they no longer provide ward or emergency services. As a result, hospital management has canceled all leaves for ten outsourced nurses and pharmacists. Nurses from various health centers around the city have also been assigned to Sadar Hospital to cover for the strikers. Sixty ANM employees, as well as third-year ANM and GNM students, have been assigned duties as alternative nursing staff.

Pharmacists Take Over, Locals Discontent

With some staff joining deputies and others participating in protests, the hospital is now heavily reliant on pharmacists. Patients are concerned about the quality of care. Many locals are becoming increasingly frustrated with the state’s health department’s failure to respond despite the strike’s growing problems.

No Disruptions So Far

Although the nurses’ strike has had an impact on the hospital, no major disruptions have been reported in any other hospitals in the district.
