Odisha’s Rising Star Tanvi Patra Claims Gold at Asian Junior Badminton Tournament

Tanvi Patra, a young girl from Odisha, has brought immense pride to her state and country by winning the gold medal in the Asian Junior Badminton Championship held in Chengdu, China. Competing in the under-15 girls’ singles category, Tanvi, who was the top seed, triumphed over Vietnam’s second-seed Nguyan Thi Thuy Huyen in a thrilling final with scores of 22-20, 21-11. The match concluded in just 34 minutes, solidifying her place as the third Indian girl to win this title after Samia Imad Farooqui in 2017 and Tasnim Mir in 2019.

Tanvi’s Journey and Triumph

Tanvi, who is just 13 years old, previously missed the opportunity to represent India in the under-19 category at the Asian Junior Championship in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, due to age restrictions. However, she made a strong comeback in China, making her state and family proud. Before returning to India during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Tanvi had already won nine trophies under the guidance of her coach, Jiang Yang Yi, in China. Since 2022, she has been training at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru, where she continues to excel.

Family Support and Sacrifice

Tanvi’s father, Ravi Narayan Patra, and mother, Shailabala Panda, have made significant sacrifices to help her pursue her dreams. Tanvi’s father even drove 1,400 kilometers from Bengaluru to Balangir so she could compete in a state-level tournament in Odisha. Tanvi, for her part, has never failed to impress, consistently winning and maintaining her national success.

Future Aspirations

Tanvi, who is currently ranked in the under-15 and under-17 categories, has been compared to Indian badminton star PV Sindhu. Her coach, Bimal Kumar, believes she has the potential to represent India in the Olympics in 2028 or 2032 if she continues on her current trajectory.
