Opposition to the proposed foreign liquor store opening at Hirakud Nardihi
Sambalpur: Residents are protesting against the proposed decision to open a foreign liquor shop at Hirakud Nardihi under Ward No. 11 of Sambalpur Metropolitan Corporation. The opening of the liquor store in a residential area near Hirakud College on the Hirakud-Remed main road will have a detrimental effect on students. The opening of the liquor store will lead to an increase in anti-social rhetoric.
Earlier, the foreign liquor store was set to open in the nearby Shaktinagar district, but was closed due to strong protests. Members of the Hirakud Residents and the Self-Help Association have questioned that how the liquor store is now allowed to open in Nardihi, which is just 100 meters from Shaktinagar. Villagers today demanded that the district magistrate’s decision to reopen the liquor store be immediately revoked.
At the time of handing over the demand letter today, Swarna Priya Behera, president of the Hirakud Slum Residents Association, Editor , Jema Mallick, Editor of the Goodli Self-Help Group Rajni Mallick, Shanti Mirdha, Gulapi Barik, Sulochana Mirdha, Balamati Mirdha, Surekha Barik, Uma Kumbhar were present.
