Sambalpur: Ragging Allegation of Second-Year Medical Student at Burla Vimsar; Committee Recommends Action

Medical Student Faces Ragging at Vimsar

Sambalpur: A second-year medical student at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (Vimsar), Burla, has complained about being ragged by senior students. Following this, the anti-ragging committee at Vimsar held a meeting and even formed a sub-committee to investigate the incident. However, the institute has not yet revealed what actions, if any, they have taken against the accused students.

Incident Details

According to reports, on the 7th of this month, a group of third-year students entered the hostel room of a second-year student. They called him out and asked if he recognized them. Then, they verbally abused him, humiliated him in front of others, and even pushed and hit him.

The victim later informed his mother about the incident. She immediately reported it verbally to Vimsar Chairman Pradeep Mohanty. Later, during the anti-ragging committee meeting, she provided a detailed account of what had happened to her son.

Victim’s Mother Decides Not to File a Formal Complaint

During the meeting, the victim’s mother stated that she was a parent herself and did not want to ruin the future of other students. Because of this, she chose not to file a written complaint. However, she urged the committee and Vimsar authorities to take necessary action against the accused students.

As a result, the committee summoned both the victim and the accused students and recorded their statements. To ensure a thorough investigation, a sub-committee was formed under the leadership of Dr. Ashok Nayak. The committee eventually decided to take strict action against those responsible.

Conflicting Statements from Vimsar Authorities

Meanwhile, Mamata Sar, a professor in the Anatomy Department and the acting chairman of Vimsar on the day of the incident, denied that any ragging had taken place. She claimed that the issue was merely a dispute between second-year and third-year students. She further stated that the matter had been resolved after a meeting.

Past Incidents and Growing Concerns

Last year, a similar case of ragging was reported at MKCG Medical College, where five senior students were punished for ragging second-year students. At that time, authorities had hoped that such incidents would stop. However, this fresh complaint from Vimsar proves otherwise.

Reports suggest that first-year students are kept in a separate, secure hostel to protect them from ragging. Unfortunately, now, second-year students are becoming victims instead.
