Sambalpur: Ramsagar Bandh is Now in a Dilapidated Condition; Boating and Musical Fountain Non-Functional Due to Lack of Maintenance, Dissatisfaction Over SMC’s Role

Large Amounts Spent, Yet No Results
Sambalpur: The historic Ramsagar Bandh, one of the oldest water bodies in Sambalpur, was renovated and beautified with lakhs of rupees. The goal was to offer a refreshing experience to residents and tourists. Authorities introduced a boating club, a floating jetty, and a musical fountain. However, within a few years, poor maintenance led to the complete shutdown of these facilities.
Public Frustration Over Neglect
Located in the heart of Sambalpur, Ramsagar Bandh was meant to be a popular attraction, but its deteriorating condition has disappointed citizens. Many residents and intellectuals blame the Municipal Corporation for its negligence and irresponsibility in maintaining the site.
Beautification Efforts and Costly Installations
A few years ago, authorities developed Ramsagar Bandh by adding cemented steps around the pond in a riverfront style, a boating club for entertainment, a floating jetty, and a musical water fountain for an aesthetic touch. To achieve this, lakhs of rupees were spent over time. The objective was to create a unique and relaxing environment for city dwellers, and gradually, it became a favorite evening hangout spot for many.

Lack of Maintenance Leads to Gradual Decline
Unfortunately, due to poor supervision and mismanagement, the site started facing multiple issues. Vandals stole electrical equipment, causing the fountain and lighting system to stop working, while the boating facilities deteriorated, making the floating jetties unusable. As a result, visitor interest declined, and the site gradually became deserted. Despite repeated complaints from residents, the Municipal Corporation has taken no serious action to address these problems.
Officials Promise a Restoration Plan
The Executive Officer of the Municipal Corporation, Bapi Mohanty, was informed about the issue. He acknowledged that boating services have been shut down for months. However, he assured that a restoration plan is being prepared to make Ramsagar Bandh functional again.
Residents, however, remain skeptical and demand urgent action rather than just promises.
