Sambalpur: Rare Surgery Performed at Vimsar Urology Department; Hybrid Cyst Removed from Patient’s Kidney
Patient’s Long-Standing Problem
Sambalpur: A rare surgical procedure was performed at the Urology Department of Vimsar, Burla, where a hybrid cyst was successfully removed from the kidney of a young patient. According to reports, a 19-year-old male from Malkangiri had been suffering from prolonged abdominal pain. Initially, he sought treatment at MIMS Hospital in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram. There, an MRI revealed pus accumulation in his right kidney. A procedure called percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) was performed.
However, even after a month of treatment, the abdominal pain persisted, and pus continued to accumulate. Eventually, the patient’s family brought him to Vimsar for further treatment.
Diagnosis at Vimsar
Upon consultation, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Mahapatra, the head of the Urology Department, reviewed the patient’s MRI, CT scan, and serology tests. These investigations confirmed the presence of a hybrid cyst measuring 8 to 10 cm in the right kidney. Typically, such cysts originate in the liver and then spread to the kidney. However, in this rare case, the infection was confined to the kidney.

They were supported by OT staff such as Surjyakanti Kisan, Omprakash Parija, and Lipi Nanda.
Successful Outcome
The surgery involved isolating and removing the hybrid cyst while ensuring the kidney remained unharmed. This complex procedure posed a significant challenge to the team, but through collective effort, it was a success. The patient is now recovering well in the ward, according to departmental sources.
This rare achievement highlights the expertise of Vimsar’s medical professionals in tackling complex and life-threatening conditions.
