Sambalpur: Reckless Driving Claims a Precious Life in Sambalpur; Worker Dies in Bolero Accident, 3 Critically Injured Admitted to Hospital

Sambalpur: A tragic accident occurred on Labour Day near Sersuantal Chowk in Sambalpur district. A speeding Bolero, driven recklessly, hit several roadside workers. One of them, 42-year-old Akshaya Chand, died on the spot. The vehicle injured about five to six others, including Sadashiv Bada and Bhagyajit Bada, who are now in critical condition and admitted to the hospital.
Accused Driver Arrested
Hirakud police arrested Ganesh Kisan of Budhakata and produced him in court. The accident has triggered outrage in the area.
Protest and Demand for Aid
Following the incident, local people staged a road blockade at Sersuantal Chowk for around 1.5 hours. They demanded financial assistance for Akshaya’s family, who have lost their only earning member. Akshaya is survived by his wife and a six-year-old son.

Eyewitness Account of the Incident
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened around 5:30 PM. A Bolero coming from Paramanpur towards Sindurpank was speeding out of control. Despite people standing by the roadside, the driver didn’t slow down. First, he hit Mrutyunjaya Barik, breaking his hand. Then, he ran over Akshaya Chand, who was standing near the road to buy medicines for his family.
Vehicle Hits Parked Car
After hitting Akshaya, the Bolero crashed into a parked car with such force that the car got crushed, injuring two people inside. All the injured, including Akshaya, were taken first to the district hospital and then to Vimsar in Burla. Doctors declared Akshaya dead at Vimsar.
Public Outrage and Temporary Relief
The incident has caused widespread anger among local residents. At around 10 AM, people blocked the road, demanding compensation from the vehicle owner. Maneswar Tahsildar later arrived and provided Rs. 10,000 as temporary aid from the Red Cross. However, the driver did not show up at the protest site.
Driver’s Condition Under Investigation
According to Sasan police officer Prabir Tripathy, a medical examination of the driver was conducted. It is still unclear whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
