Sambalpur: Rising Number of Job Seekers, Only 3 Hired in 4 Years in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: Government jobs are becoming increasingly scarce, with the majority of positions now being offered on a contract basis. As a result, the number of job seekers continues to rise, creating fierce competition for scarce opportunities. Many unemployed students and graduates are registering with the district employment office in the hopes of finding work. Regardless of the promises made, finding work in Sambalpur has proven to be extremely difficult.

Only 3 Hired Since 2021

According to official district employment office data, only three people have been appointed through the office between 2021 and September 11, 2024. This downward hiring trend has led many job seekers to lose faith in the district employment office as a reliable source of job placements.

Industrial Development Without Local Employment

Local residents were promised priority for employment during Sambalpur’s industrial development. Despite the establishment of numerous industries in the district, local youth are finding it increasingly difficult to secure employment. Industries have used local land, forests, and water resources, but have failed to keep their promises of hiring local talent. This unmet expectation has led to occasional protests.

Although some industries have provided contractual positions to local youth, this has done little to address the region’s overall unemployment problem.

Thousands of Job Seekers, Minimal Employment

Currently, there are 21,934 job seekers registered with the district employment office. Between 2021 and September 11, 2024, only three people were employed, and all of them were hired in 2021. Since then, no job appointments have been made in 2022, 2023, or even as of now in 2024.

In 2022, 3,045 people registered with the employment office, followed by 6,785 in 2023 and another 936 so far in 2024. However, no one has been hired through the office in recent years.

Notifications and Applications

In 2022, the employment office issued three job notifications, resulting in 120 applications. However, no such notices were sent in 2023. In 2024, 36 job notifications were published, resulting in 379 applications. However, no one has been hired this year, according to the employment office.
