Sambalpur: Rising Threat of Stray Animals in City; Cattle and Dogs Dominate Roads and Monkeys Invade Homes, SMC Authorities Remain Inactive

Stray Cattle and Dogs Invade Roads

Sambalpur: The increasing number of stray animals in Burla has become a daily nuisance for residents. Stray cows, dogs, and even monkeys have established themselves as regular inhabitants of the town. These animals now cause disruptions both on the streets and in homes.

In most major intersections, like University Square, Planetarium Square, and Kirba Square, groups of cows, calves, and bulls roam freely, particularly in the evenings. These animals block roads, causing accidents as bikers and cars struggle to navigate through them. Often, vehicles skid on cow dung, leading to mishaps. Collisions with cows and bulls are common, sometimes resulting in severe injuries or fatalities.

Bulls Fighting in the Middle of the Road

Bullfights on the roads have become a frequent sight. At Pariba Market, cows and bulls have become a significant problem for both vendors and customers. Large bulls target shops, often damaging them and refusing to leave despite multiple attempts to chase them away.

Shocking Incidents in the Market

In one alarming incident during the weekly market, a bull charged at a customer buying tomatoes, hitting him with its horns. The man narrowly escaped serious injury.

Negligence by Authorities

Stray cattle have been a problem in Burla for years, yet the authorities at the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) have not taken any effective action. Stray dogs have also become a growing concern. Packs of dogs roam the streets, causing frequent accidents by suddenly running in front of bikes.

Ineffective Sterilization Programs

Though the Animal Husbandry Department conducts sterilization drives for dogs, the influx of stray dogs from nearby areas like Hirakud Dam and picnic spots continues to add to their numbers. The zero-point road connecting Jhankarani and other areas has become a hotspot for accidents caused by stray animals.

Monkey Menace in Residential Areas

Retired employees and officers residing in various neighborhoods in Burla are also suffering due to the monkey menace. Many houses have gardens with fruits and vegetables, which are often destroyed by groups of monkeys. These animals also damage asbestos roofs and glass windows.

Residents Struggle for Peace

The presence of these stray animals has made life difficult for Burla residents. People cannot live peacefully in their homes or move safely outside due to the constant threat posed by stray cattle, dogs, and monkeys. Immediate action is necessary to address this growing problem.
