Sambalpur: RPCB Warns Hindalco to Remove Excess Ash from Durgapali; Demand Action Against Violators

Sambalpur: Sambalpur authorities have issued a stern warning to Hindalco regarding the ash lying near Durgapali, in front of the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) office. The Regional Pollution Control Board (RPCB) has directed the company to remove the excess ash immediately, citing violations of operating permits. The District Administration issued instructions to take strict action against transporters involved in illegal dumping of ash.

Ash Dumping Violates Permits

The RPCB observed that Hindalco had exceeded permissible ash dumping levels at Durgapali. The ash piles were found to be higher than allowed under the Consent to Operate (CTO) permit. The Board instructed the company to reduce the ash levels to the height of the SMC office building and clear any ash dumped along the National Highway.

Unapproved Dumping Leads to Pollution

Transporters illegally dumped ash on roadsides while delivering it from Hindalco to SDA land, causing significant air pollution in the area. The RPCB has ordered the further investigation and warned that failure to comply will result in strong action against the company and transporters.

SDA Land and Durgapali’s Pollution Concerns

The Sambalpur Development Authority (SDA) allocated land near Durgapali for development in 2008-09. However, it was later converted into an ash dumping site. Recently, attempts to level the land resulted in widespread dumping that exceeded the RPCB’s approved limits.

Proximity to River Raises Environmental Alarm

Local residents raised strong objections due to the proximity of the dumping site to the Mahanadi River. Regulations prohibit ash dumping within 500 meters of the riverbanks, yet this rule was violated. Locals have demanded action against those responsible for granting illegal permissions.

Urgent Need for Compliance

The RPCB emphasized the importance of adhering to environmental guidelines to prevent air and water pollution. The agency warned Hindalco to act promptly and responsibly, removing ash and addressing violations. Failure to comply will result in strict penalties, ensuring environmental safety and public health.
