Sambalpur: Critical Patient of Pardhiapali Incident Left Waiting in Hospital for Half an Hour

Sambalpur: Ambulance and hospital services are vital in saving lives, but delays in these services can put lives at risk. A distressing incident took place at the Sambalpur District Headquarters Hospital on Friday evening and highlighted the importance of immediate medical transport.

A bike accident took place near Pardhiapali under the Ainthapali police station around 6 am. By 6:25 am, the Ainthapali Police and the National Highway Police jointly brought the three accident victims to the Sambalpur District General Hospital. Their condition was critical. Tragically, doctors declared one dead on arrival while the other two were in critical condition.

After providing initial treatment to the two critically injured patients, the hospital staff decided to shift them to Burla for further treatment. However, a question was raised regarding the delay due to the lack of ambulances readily available in the district hospital. Despite the presence of hospital officials, staff, and police, the hospital did not have a 108 ambulance (free ambulance service).

The lack of communication and the delay in the arrival of the ambulance resulted in the two seriously injured staying in the district hospital for more than half an hour. Even when the ambulance finally arrived, there was an additional delay as the 108 staff took some time to complete the handover process and the police indicated that they would understand the situation.

Surprisingly, the district hospital had its ICU ambulance available, but the hospital authorities did not use it. Perhaps they reserved the ambulance to provide services to wealthy patients or high-profile cases, ignoring the urgent needs of the two seriously injured victims.

This incident highlights the importance of prompt and accessible ambulance services and demonstrates the need for better coordination and prioritization in hospital systems, particularly in life-threatening emergencies.
