Sambalpur: Cyber fraud is increasing, but arrests are not being made
Sambalpur: Cybercrime has now engulfed the entire country. Cyber fraudsters are stealing lakhs of rupees with just a click of a button. Whether it’s due to slight carelessness or lack of awareness, cyber fraudsters are taking away the hard-earned money of people. However, what hurts people more is the lack of action against these cyber fraudsters. According to the National Cyber Crime Portal, while there have been over 66,000 complaints related to cyber fraud, only 500 arrests have been made. Between 2020 and February 2024, there have been 31 lakh complaints related to cyber attacks on AIIMS, data theft from ICMR, and fraud in the name of providing loans. Cyber fraudsters are taking everything under the guise of loan provision. This is significantly affecting the economic foundation of India and damaging the financial backbone of the people. Especially, people from low-income groups are being targeted by these fraudsters under the pretense of loan provision. While cyber fraud is increasing, the number of arrests in these cases is very low. According to the data, less than 1% of the total cyber fraud cases filed by various legal agencies like the police and military have resulted in arrests. Out of more than 66,000 complaints related to cyber fraud, only 500 arrests have been made.
The situation in Sambalpur and the rest of Odisha is similar. Although Sambalpur police have managed to arrest some criminals committing cybercrime through social media, the number of arrests in cyber fraud cases is still negligible. Sambalpur police were only successful in arresting some members of the Jamtara gang once in a cyber fraud case. Since then, the hands of Sambalpur police in fraud cases have been more or less empty. This is now increasing everyone’s concern.
As the election season continues, cyber fraudsters have become even more active. Due to the police and various agencies failing to catch the fraudsters, this number is rapidly increasing. Everyone has heard of Jamtara in the country. But now, there are many places like Jamtara where cyber fraudsters are continuously spreading their net to deceive people. If actions are not taken to arrest the fraudsters, this number is expected to increase further, according to experts.
