Sambalpur: First in Vimsar History; CP-Affected Child’s Body and Eye Donation Sets an Example

Sambalpur: The process of body donation started at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla in 2012. For the first time, Sai Saran Nanda (19), who was suffering from Cerebral Palsy (CP), donated his body and eyes after his passing. His father, senior journalist Shiba Shankar Nanda, and mother, teacher Manjari Nanda, along with family members and dignitaries, handed over his body to Vimsar in the presence of medical students. The event was attended by Vimsar’s Executive Director Bhavagrahi Rath, Head of the Anatomy Department Dr. Mamata Sar, social worker Rajanikant Nag, and others.

Dr. Mamata Sar, from the Anatomy Department, mentioned that dead bodies are essential for medical students’ practical classes. While the bodies of ordinary individuals are useful, the bodies of CP patients are also crucial for surface marking and demonstration purposes. Thus, after the death of CP patients or those with physical or mental disabilities, their families can donate the bodies to medical colleges.

According to the new standards of the National Medical Commission (NMC), one body is needed for practical classes for ten students. With 200 students performing practicals at Vimsar, there is a significant requirement for more bodies. Currently, various medical colleges, including Sundargarh Medical College, borrow bodies from VIMSAR for their students. However, Vimsar receives only five bodies annually through donations. Dr. Sar noted that despite recovering unidentified bodies from different places, there has not been any inconvenience for practicals so far. Nonetheless, she emphasized the need for more body donations to Vimsar.

Previously, after the death of Sai Saran’s grandfather, social worker Bhagabat Nanda, his body was also donated to Vimsar. Sai Saran’s eyes were donated by his family as well. According to family information, Sai Saran has been suffering from this neurological disease since birth. He passed away late last night due to a heart attack. Dr. Mahesh Sahu and colleague Gurudev Bisi from Vimsar’s Eye Bank collected the retina from his eyes.
