Sambalpur: Health Alert; Rising Mosquito Breeding Sparks Dengue and Malaria Concerns, Nine Dengue Cases Reported This Month

Increase in Dengue and Malaria Cases Due to Mosquito Breeding

Sambalpur: Sambalpur is currently facing a serious health concern as mosquito populations grow in both urban and rural areas, leading to an increase in dengue and malaria cases. Despite extensive measures implemented by the health department and municipal corporation, residents continue to suffer from mosquito-borne diseases. In the last month alone, 9 dengue cases have been reported.

Current Statistics and Health Department Response

Last year, a total of 161 malaria cases were reported in the district. Currently, 80 cases of malaria have been identified this month. Of these, 3 are from Sambalpur city, while the rest are from rural areas. The Redhakhol subdivision, especially the Charmal and Naktideul blocks, has reported the highest number of malaria cases. Some patients are still receiving treatment in various hospitals, while most have recovered.

Concerns and Complaints from Residents

Residents have expressed concern about an increase in mosquito population due to improper garbage disposal and clogged drains. Many drains are clogged with garbage, causing water to stagnate and a breeding ground for mosquitos. The municipal corporation has been accused of failing to conduct regular fogging or oil spraying to control the mosquito population. While urban areas are severely impacted, rural areas suffer as a result of insufficient waste management and a lack of effective panchayat measures.

Need for Immediate Action

The health department and municipal corporation must address these issues immediately to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Proper garbage disposal, regular drain cleaning, and effective mosquito control measures are critical to protecting public health.
