Sambalpur: Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, the state’s newly appointed Health Minister, paid a one-day visit to Burla Vimsar Hospital today. During his visit, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the hospital’s medical management. He convened a review meeting and directed authorities to enhance patient care services.

Meeting with Patients

When the Health Minister arrived at VIMSAR Medical, he first met patients who had been transferred from Anugul due to post-surgery infections caused by cataract operations. He inquired about their health and directed the medical authorities to provide them with exceptional medical care. He then took a tour of the hospital’s emergency surgery ward. He expressed his displeasure over the various mismanagement issues, such as broken OT tables and malfunctioning life-saving equipment. The doctors informed him of the issues with the equipment and other medical instruments, prompting him to contact the authorities for immediate action.

Hospital Inspection

The Health Minister was also dissatisfied with the emergency department’s poor arrangements and lack of adequate patient beds. He questioned why the mismanagement issues discovered during his previous visit remained unresolved. Jaynarayan Mishra, the MLA from Sambalpur, attended the review meeting.

Review Meeting

After touring the hospital, Dr. Mahaling conducted a review meeting in the Medical College’s meeting hall. The meeting was attended by Professor Bhabagrahi Rath, the Acting Director of the Medical College, Professor Pradeep Mahanty, the Dean of the Medical College, and Professor Lalmohan Nayak, the Hospital Superintendent, along with the heads of all departments. Professor Rath discussed the issue of doctor recruitment, stating that despite having a permanent director previously, doctor recruitment had not been possible. Although interviews were conducted for new doctor recruitment, only a few candidates attended, leaving several positions vacant. He also highlighted the ongoing challenges with the hospital’s infrastructure.

The department heads presented the issues in their respective departments, demanding solutions. They requested the Minister to take steps towards arranging independent departmental spaces and constructing a maternity ward. Representatives from the Junior Doctor Association, other doctors, and staff members also raised their concerns with the Health Minister.

Promises for Immediate Action

After hearing all of the complaints, Dr. Mahaling promised that immediate action would be taken to address the issues. He promised that all necessary assistance would be provided to ensure excellent and organized patient care at VIMSAR. The Minister promised that an MRI machine would be available soon, and that e-vehicles would be arranged for patient transportation. Steps would be taken to appoint a permanent director, and any absentee doctors would face appropriate consequences after investigations.

The Health Minister emphasized that, although the government was formed only twenty days ago, measures would be taken to ensure smooth health services in the coming days. He also mentioned that steps would be taken to open a super specialty department and make the necessary arrangements for its operation.
