Sambalpur: Sambalpur Leads in Empowering Differently-Abled with E-Rickshaws; To Distribute 500 E-Rickshaws on December 16 in Sambalpur
Sambalpur: Starting from next month, differently-abled individuals across the state will begin driving e-rickshaws. This initiative aims to help them become self-reliant, enabling them to support their families. On December 16, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will distribute e-rickshaws at a special event at PHD Padia, Sambalpur. This program is a part of the state’s efforts to promote empowerment among differently-abled citizens.
Sambalpur Leads the Way in E-Rickshaw Distribution
Sambalpur district has already pioneered the distribution of e-rickshaws for differently-abled drivers. With financial support from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), 500 e-rickshaws have reached Sambalpur. These vehicles have not only helped create employment opportunities but have also empowered individuals to support themselves financially. Currently, 102 differently-abled individuals are operating e-rickshaws in Sambalpur.
Background of the E-Rickshaw Initiative
The first e-rickshaw project for differently-abled individuals in Sambalpur began in 2019. Since then, the program has expanded to various blocks in the district. As part of this initiative, differently-abled drivers are trained to operate the vehicles and become financially independent. Through these e-rickshaws, individuals can earn their livelihood and contribute to family support while also assisting other differently-abled people, especially during times like elections.

Statewide Expansion and Future Plans
Sambalpur’s success has gained attention, and now the state government plans to implement similar projects across Odisha. On August 7 this year, a collaboration between the Ministry of Coal and the Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) department facilitated the signing of a project agreement under which MCL has contributed 7.5 crore rupees to provide 500 e-rickshaws to differently-abled people across the state.
Recent Progress and Distribution
The government distributed 66 e-rickshaws to differently-abled individuals in Sambalpur during December 2023 as part of an ongoing empowerment program. Officials have also handed over 16 more e-rickshaws in recent months to help more people achieve self-sufficiency. As of now, Sambalpur has a total of 102 e-rickshaws, with 70 provided by MCL and 32 by the district authorities.
Impact of the E-Rickshaw Program
The e-rickshaws have already shown significant positive impacts on the lives of differently-abled individuals. They have become role models for others, especially during elections, as they are actively involved in the transportation of voters. This program has inspired many to participate in democratic processes and has helped them feel included in society.
Looking Ahead: More E-Rickshaws to Be Distributed
The government will distribute 500 more e-rickshaws on December 16, including 15 for differently-abled individuals in Sambalpur. Sambalpur has approximately 21,700 differently-abled residents, and authorities will continue to expand the program in the coming days based on this population. Additionally, there are plans to approve 50 more e-rickshaws for Sambalpur in the future, further supporting the empowerment of differently-abled citizens in the region.
