Sambalpur: Massive Corex Racket Busted; 33 Arrested, 16,320 Bottles Seized in Raid
Sambalpur: In a big crackdown ahead of the next general elections, authorities in Sambalpur discovered a major Corex racket. Following tip-offs, police raided two sites and detained 33 people in connection with illegal drug trafficking. A stunning 16,320 bottles of Corex cough syrup were seized from city depots.
The contraband, transported by trucks from Kolkata, was destined for distribution during the elections. The police, however, intercepted the traffickers before the illicit substances could be circulated. The raids took place in Nildunguri and Sahu Colony, which are infamous for such operations.
Authorities revealed that despite stringent security measures due to the ongoing election preparations, drug trafficking persists in Sambalpur. The mafia organized the smuggling operations from Dankuni of Hoogly, West Bengal, and stockpiled illegal substances ahead of the elections for later sale. Police activities were supported by confidential informants, resulting in successful raids.
During the raids, 1080 liters of syrup were recovered from Nildunguri, and arrests were made in three districts Sambalpur, Bargarh, and Sonpur. In addition, the suspects’ automobiles, mobile phones, cash, and damning material were confiscated. Some of those seized were linked to previous criminal cases, showing their involvement in organized crime networks.
Further investigations revealed Rohan Khan’s involvement in the Corex smuggling case. Khan gave critical information about the trafficking of contraband from Kolkata to Sambalpur. Police grabbed another load of bottles in Sahu Colony, stopping them from being distributed.
In total, 23 net bags holding 5520 bottles were recovered, and seven people were caught during the operation. The authorities also seized automobiles and mobile phones from the accused, strengthening their case against the illicit drug trade.
The authorities promise to increase measures to combat drug trafficking, particularly during the critical period running up to the elections. With the arrest of key persons and the recovery of large amounts of contraband, law enforcement hopes to break the networks that facilitate such illegal activities in the region.
