Sambalpur: Patients’ Lives at Risk in DHH Dialysis Center; Multiple Patients Using One Dialyzer
Sambalpur: Doctors use dialysis to treat patients with severe kidney conditions. As the number of kidney patients has risen over time, so has the demand for dialysis. As a result, the dialysis center at the Sambalpur District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) is frequently overcrowded, with patients receiving care in turn.
Outsourcing Dialysis Services
The government has outsourced the management of this critical medical service to Rahi Care, a private organization. Although patients receive free services, the health department bears all associated costs.

Allegations of Mismanagement
However, allegations have surfaced about improper practices at the Sambalpur Dialysis Centre. According to reports, the center is using a single dialyzer for multiple patients, despite medical guidelines requiring that each dialyzer be used for only one patient to avoid cross-contamination.
Health Department’s Response
When people brought these allegations to Dr. Sujata Rani Mishra, the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), she confirmed that she had received similar complaints. Dr. Mishra stated that doctors should use a dialyzer on only one patient. “We’ve told them not to reuse dialyzers.” Despite these instructions, the private organization continues to use this practice for cost savings.
Need for Immediate Action
Dr. Mishra has stated her commitment to resolving this issue. “I will call them for a discussion to understand why they are continuing this practice,” she told them. This issue requires immediate attention to ensure the safety and well-being of kidney patients receiving dialysis at the DHH center.
