City Swarming with Numberless Autos

Sambalpur: All autos in the city needed to get police numbering. The police were supposed to register all autos in the city. Periodic checks and fines were also announced. At the beginning of the new year, the Sambalpur police issued strict directives to all auto drivers. It’s been over seven months, but it has yet to materialize. As a result, the city is now overrun with unregistered vehicles, many of which lack proper licensing and fitness. This has created the impression that the police’s plans are mere words.

Mandatory Police Numbering Plan

On December 31, 2023, Sambalpur police held a press conference to present an agenda that focused on the issue of illegal autos. Authorities were supposed to implement police numbering for all vehicles in the city. Owners were to register at the police station and receive a unique number to prominently display, aimed at promptly addressing criminal activities.

Anonymous Auto Driver’s Revelation

However, seven months later, the police’s agenda is still unfulfilled. An anonymous auto driver revealed that the majority of vehicles in the city lack proper documentation. Many stolen vehicles are still in operation, without fitness certificates, insurance, or even driver’s licenses. Hundreds of such vehicles are on the streets, with no police inspections, thereby increasing antisocial behavior. He urged the police to take the situation seriously.

Viral Video and Parking Issues

A few months ago, a viral video showed human trafficking taking place in a moving auto from Laxmi Talkies to Mudipada, with two people in a compromising position in the back and two others in the front. Despite this, the auto remains unidentified. Many vehicles park haphazardly, with no designated parking spots, stopping wherever they find space.

Unfit Vehicles Transporting School Children

Furthermore, many vehicles now transport schoolchildren, posing significant risks due to their lack of fitness. The public has demanded that the police take independent action in this matter. A response from the Sambalpur SP has yet to be received.
