Sambalpur: SHG Women’s Concern; Burdened with Vehicle Repairs, No Assistance from SMC

Sambalpur: In the Sambalpur Metropolitan Corporation (SMC) region, garbage collection is primarily the duty of self-help groups. The SMC has provided special battery-powered vehicles for their garbage collecting activities, with women trained to operate them. Initially, everything appeared to be running well. Concerns grew as the vehicles deteriorated.

The self-help group members were assured that the SMC would repair the vehicles. Unfortunately, the burden has now been placed on the shoulders of women. From wheel rims to engines, women are being tasked with repairing any faults that arise.

These added responsibilities have forced women to spend unneeded costs. Furthermore, terrible road conditions have hindered their ability to carry out their tasks, putting their pay in danger. Women have been forced to make costly repairs out of fear of the consequences. They have stated their concerns about the current situation, which is similar to one that occurred less than two years prior. Despite earlier complaints, the SMC agreed to make repairs and reimburse any expenses incurred.

Pressure Mounts on Women; Complaint Lodged with District Magistrate

Women are now again being pressured to carry out vehicle repairs, including tire changes. Women drivers have expressed their worries and demanded relief from the additional responsibility put on them. Members of the Hirakud self-help organization, which is in charge of garbage collection using battery-powered vehicles, went to the Sambalpur District Collector’s office on Friday to express their concerns.

Despite the government’s emphasis on empowering women through employment and self-sufficiency, they continue to face excessive pressure. While the SMC applauds women’s garbage collecting efforts, it is critical to address concerns raised about the extra responsibilities they are forced to take on.
