Sambalpur: Student’s Dreams Shattered; Rs. 55,000 Lost in Part-Time Job Scam
Sambalpur: A student from the Ainthapali police station area in Sambalpur fell victim to a cyber fraud involving a part-time job scam. Fraudsters are continuously inventing new ways to scam people, and many fall victim to these schemes owing to a lack of awareness.
On Monday, the student received a message on Telegram from an unknown number offering part-time work. Interested, the student contacted them, and the conversation continued on WhatsApp. The scammer attracted students by promising a number of tasks and rewards, stating that they would earn more if they invested.
Initially, the scammer paid the student a tiny sum of money for performing a task, leading the student to believe the offer was legitimate. However, the scammer then deceived the student into sharing their OTP, allowing the fraudsters to get access to the student’s account.
The fraudsters then withdrew a total of Rs. 55,000 from the student’s account in various transactions. When the student attempted to contact the fraudster again, their phone number was switched off and they could not be reached.
Left with no other option, the student filed a written complaint at the Ainthapali police station on Tuesday. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
