Redhakhol: Subhadra has not given up in spite of the shortage. She has tried to stand on her own feet. Subhadra Kheti of Chudapudug Village of Bhartapur Panchayat, Redhakhol Block, Sambalpur District.
Subhadra’s family was full of poverty. The family members were working on the crusher nearby. She spent her time raising her two sons. Her husband was a farmer. All that was earned from crossbreeding and farming was spent. The whole family lived in the hut house. According to Subhadra, in spite of the shortage, she thought of doing something. She himself first saved some money and bought a goat 5 years ago. After that, there was no turning back.
Later, on her own initiative, she formed Annapurna Women’s Self-Help Group in the village. She took a loan of 50 thousand rupees from that group and invested in goat farming. Now she has about 40 to 50 young goats. Now about 20 to 25 thousand rupees per month is earned from goat farming, says Subhadra. While his daughter is studying, his son is working in a private company after graduation. Her husband also takes care of goats. Members of his women’s group also help look after the goats for a small fee. Anyway, now, with Subhadra’s own efforts, the rice fields have been converted into pavements.
Subhadra says she could have kept more goats if she had gotten some financial support. She also built a stable for the goats. If this expectation is met, it could help to employ more women. She said that she could have progressed if he had been trained in modern goat farming. Similarly, Subhadra is well known in the region as a volunteer.
