Sambalpur: Vegetable prices Hike, tomatoes @ 70/80 per kg
While the administration has no control over the price of vegetables in the market, it has a direct impact on the market. Over the past few days, people have been forced to reduce their purchases of vegetables due to high prices. From the poorest of the poor to the middle-class and the great of the poor, the number of hours spent buying on vegetables is now reduced.
On Friday, petrol in Sambalpur was priced at Rs 102 per liter and diesel at Rs 80 per liter. Petrol and oil prices are affecting the cost of transporting vegetables and groceries. According to Surendra Nath Hansda, Market Intelligence Officer (MIO), the recent hurricane and unwanted rain has damaged crops and affected oil prices. Imports from other states are also low, so there is no possibility of a further decline in price. “Onion prices are expected to remain stable,” he said.
With the Ganesh Chaturthi on September 10, vegetables have skyrocketed price since the start of the festive season tomatoes at Rs 80 per kg, while cauliflower costs Rs 50, cabbage costs Rs 30, eggplant (white), Rs 60, black eggplant, Rs 40,bitter gourd Rs 50,lady’sfinger Rs 60. While carrots Rs 60, beans cost Rs 80, peas cost Rs 100, potatoes cost Rs 18 to Rs 20 and onions cost Rs 36 to Rs 40, the district supply department has no control over the price of food items such as vegetables.
Similarly, two vehicles come from Nasik, Maharashtra, mostly. Sambalpur has six wholesalers of potatoes and onions. Market prices often depend on the transportation of potatoes and onions. However, onion prices are now falling sharply as potatoes fall.
