Sambalpur: Vimsar Doctor Falls Victim to Cybercrime, Loses Nearly 2 Lakh Rupees After Opening Anonymous Link
Sambalpur: A young female doctor working as a house surgeon at the well-known Vimsar Hospital in Burla has been the latest victim of a modern cyber fraud. The unaware medical professional lost an insane Rs 1,98,319 from her bank account after falling victim to a sophisticated online scam.
The incident began when the doctor received a seemingly normal message on her phone from an unknown number. The message, which contained a suspicious link, lured her into opening it, setting off a chain of events that would eventually result in her financial loss.
Despite not revealing any personal information or One-Time Passwords (OTPs), the doctor’s account was unexpectedly debited three times, with Rs 23,252, Rs 19,708, and Rs 6,500 taken illegally.
Alarmingly, the doctor then received a call from an unknown individual claiming to be from the State Bank of India (SBI). To gain the doctor’s trust, the caller assured her that the money she had withdrawn would be restored. However, this guarantee was a fraud, as the caller then sent an APK file to the doctor’s WhatsApp, which, when downloaded, gave attackers access to her personal and financial information.
Within seconds, the doctor’s account was debited for the fourth and last time, totaling Rs 1,48,860, leaving her financially heartbroken.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, the doctor immediately contacted SBI’s customer service and discovered that she had been the victim of a sophisticated cyber fraud. Determined to seek justice, she immediately filed an official complaint with the Burla Police Station.
