Sambalpur: Young Woman Raped and Murdered; Accused Shows Police How He Killed and Disposed of Victim’s Body

Sambalpur: In a shocking crime committed under the jurisdiction of Nakatideul Police Station, a young woman from Sahebi village was raped and murdered before being dumped in a jungle. Three days after the incident, her naked and decomposed body was discovered in the forest, sparking widespread concern in the area. As part of the investigation, the accused, Hari Behera, demonstrated the crime scene to police and a magistrate today.

Victim Disappears After Going to Wash Clothes

On August 30, the victim, Binodini (name changed), went to Suagijharan nala alone to wash clothes but did not return. Two days later, on September 1, her naked, decomposed body was discovered in a shallow ditch in the jungle near Jharrabeda, Panduripasi village.

Villagers Protest for Justice

After the body was discovered, Sahebi villagers shut down roads for two days, demanding justice and compensation for the victim’s family. In response, Nakatideul Police arrested Hari Behera from Sahebi village and brought him to court. Today, the police arrested him for two days on remand in order to reconstruct the crime scene.

Accused Recreates the Crime Scene

Hari Behera led the police to the crime spot and demonstrated how he committed the murder. He revealed where, how, and under what circumstances he killed Binodini. He also showed how he carried her body to the jungle and dumped it.

According to Sambalpur Additional SP Albinus Kerketa, Hari Behera stated that while Binodini was washing clothes at the nala, he approached her and applied her soap to himself. Binodini was offended and responded by insulting him, resulting in a heated argument. In a fit of rage, Hari struck her on the back of the head, causing her to fall into the water and drown.

Covering Up the Crime

Hari attempted to hide her body after killing Binodini by submerging it in a check dam near the nala. He then returned home, as if nothing had occurred. Knowing that the body would eventually float, he returned to the location at 7 p.m. to remove it from the water. He carried it on his shoulders for half a kilometer before dumping it in a remote jungle area.

Evidence Recovered During Reenactment

During the crime reenactment, police discovered Binodini’s black petticoat in the nala, where Hari had hidden it. The police seized this item and other evidence. According to Additional SP Kerketa, Hari changed his clothes and hid other materials after returning home from the murder. These items were also confiscated by the investigators.

Authorities Oversee the Crime Reconstruction

The entire crime scene reconstruction was overseen by Nakatideul Tahsildar Amar Dungdung, who was present in his role as a magistrate. Sambalpur SP Prashant Kumar Meher, investigation officer Savitabala Sethi, and Nakatideul police station in-charge Jhasaketan Bhoi were all present to ensure that evidence was properly gathered.
