Sambalpur: Sambalpur’s Streets Overflow with Garbage; SMC’s Cleanliness Campaign Fails to Deliver
Sambalpur: The road leading from Budharaja to Shantinagar has turned into a disorganized, garbage-filled alley. Similar scenes can be seen every day on the Gopalmal road. In the Mudipada area, there are constant complaints about garbage collection failures. Even in front of the Fire Department, waste is removed only once every three days. Such problems are common throughout the city, but no effective solution has been found yet.
Cleanliness in the City
Cleanliness in the city is in a dire state. Garbage remains on the streets for long periods without being collected. Residents repeatedly filed complaints, but the cleaning contractors did not take them seriously. Even when reported to SMC officials, no action seems to be taken. In Ward 22 of the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation, heaps of garbage are accumulating in the Ghusrijuda Bundh area, despite daily cleaning being promised. When a tractor arrives to collect the trash, it often skips for two days, causing the surrounding area to stink.

Waste Collection Process
Garbage trucks and cleaning staff have been assigned to collect waste from homes. People are instructed to separate their dry and wet waste before disposing of it. Every ward has been provided with the required cleaning staff. Supervisors, known as “Swachh Sathis” and one main supervisor, are in charge of directing the cleaning process. However, despite these measures, local residents report that garbage continues to pile up in public areas. People claim that the Swachh Sathis and supervisors do not visit the wards on a regular basis, which has caused this problem.
Complaints About Inconsistent Cleaning
In some places, cleaning staff never appear, even when there are frequent complaints. Locals have complained about the absence of regular street sweeping in these areas. For example, the situation in Sahu Colony, located in the same ward, is no different. Due to irregular cleaning, residents are facing significant difficulties.
The Municipal Corporation’s Response
In response to these issues, the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation has stated that they are planning a more extensive cleaning campaign throughout the city. However, they mentioned that it would take some time to fully implement these plans.
