Sambalpur: Second Major Crime in a Month; Youth Killed in Broad Daylight Attack on Sambalpur’s Thelkopada Road
Sambalpur: A violent murder occurred in Sambalpur’s Thelkopada area, where a young man, Soni Shandha (26), was murdered in broad daylight. According to reports, his death was the result of a group attack, shocking the community and raising serious concerns about the area’s law and order situation. Despite police presence, criminals’ fear appears to have decreased, as evidenced by this shocking event. Sambalpur police are under scrutiny for the second major crime in the area in a month, raising concerns about public safety.
Background of the Incident
On the morning of the attack, Soni Shandha, a former sanitation worker at the local hospital, went to a snack shop at around 10 AM. There, he encountered two individuals named Sonu Ganda and Chaman Behera, who were known to him. A fight broke out among the three men, apparently linked to old grudges. Soni attacked Chaman and fled from the scene, but Chaman’s family pursued him and reached his home, leading to further conflict between the two families.
Later, as tensions rose, two of Chaman’s relatives, Aman and Sahil, joined the altercation with iron rods and sharp weapons. Along with two others, Beda and Dileswar, they attacked Soni as a group. Witnesses reported that the attackers chased Soni down Thelkopada Road, where he was assaulted with various sharp weapons in front of bystanders. His family immediately took him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead due to multiple cuts and injuries.

Police Investigation
The police team, led by SDPO Tofan Bag and town station IIC Ranjan Biswal, arrived at the hospital and began their investigation. Police have now deployed officers to monitor Thelkopada and the hospital to prevent any further incidents.
Soni’s family, meanwhile, claims that the fight started only after Soni had defended himself against an attack by Chaman. They argue that if the police had responded sooner, the situation might not have escalated to murder.
Possible Motive and Soni’s Background
Soni committed theft and robbery, which led to jail time in his troubled past. After authorities released him on bail, he returned home and reportedly quit his sanitation job, hoping his sister would take over his position to help support his family. Furthermore, Soni’s previous romantic relationship with a hospital employee had created tension. After the woman left him, Soni allegedly demanded repayment of the money he had given her, causing further conflict between him and her family. This previous altercation may have contributed to the ongoing feud that led to Soni’s death.
Family Impact
Soni’s untimely death has left his family in grief, especially his two young children, aged 11 and 13, who now grow up without a father. His wife, elderly parents, and seven siblings are struggling to cope with the tragedy, questioning the loss and the circumstances that led to this horrific end.
The police are now thoroughly investigating the case, but tensions in the area remain high as the community awaits justice and reassurance from local authorities.
