Two Consecutive Nights of Robberies Raise Concerns
Sambalpur: In a concerning incident, Vimsar, a government medical college and hospital in Burla, has come under fire after a patient’s relative was robbed at knifepoint on the hospital grounds. Despite the presence of security personnel, the incidents occurred on consecutive nights, raising concerns about the hospital’s security arrangements.
On the night of the 24th, between 1-2 AM, a young man entered Ward No. 15 of the Surgery Department, where 63-year-old patient Banamali Sahu from Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh, had been admitted. The patient’s son, Kamalesh, and his mother, Rajkumari, had joined him. While Kamalesh was asleep, the assailant stole his phone. Despite his best efforts, Kamalesh could not find his phone.
Escalating Tensions as Security Fails to Act
Surprisingly, the same young man returned the following night, around the same time. He sat on Kamalesh’s bed, displaying the stolen phone. The thief refused to return Kamalesh’s phone even after he pleaded and offered money. As Kamalesh attempted to summon security, the assailant brandished a knife, threatening him and boldly declaring that the guards would do nothing.

Kamalesh and his mother complained to both the police and hospital authorities, but they took no action. The incidents left Kamalesh so shaken that he left his father’s bedside and went home. His mother, concerned for their safety, insisted on releasing her husband early.
Security Concerns Raised as Incidents Continue
This incident has sparked outrage among hospital employees and patients alike. The recent violent incident in Kolkata, in which a medical student was brutally assaulted, has highlighted the need for improved security in hospitals throughout the country. Vimsar is currently facing similar concerns.
Despite the hospital spending nearly half a crore rupees on security measures, the private security agency tasked with keeping the premises safe has failed miserably. The security lapses have sparked widespread outrage, with many accusing the hospital administration of negligence.

Professor Dr. Bhavagrahi Rath, Vimsar’s Director, has assured that they will thoroughly investigate the situation and take immediate steps to improve security. However, staff and patients remain on edge, uncertain whether the administration will address their concerns effectively.
