Sambalpur: Security Measures Weak at Historic Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur; OISF Jawans Guarding Empty-Handed

Tourist Hotspot but Security Concerns Persist
Sambalpur: Hirakud Dam is Asia’s longest earthen dam and a famous tourist destination in India. Every day, visitors from across the country come here, and the number of tourists increases significantly during winter. On Sundays, thousands of people visit the dam, including individuals from different backgrounds. Since it is impossible to rule out the presence of terrorists among them, ensuring strong security at the site is crucial.
Security Arrangements Raise Concerns
However, the current security arrangements raise serious questions. The security personnel stationed at the dam are completely unarmed not even carrying a simple baton. They stand guard wearing khaki uniforms but lack any weapons for protection.
Security Transition from Odisha Police to OISF
Previously, Odisha Police was responsible for the dam’s security. A few years ago, the Odisha Industrial Security Force (OISF) took over this duty. Now, OISF personnel, both men and women, guard the dam from the entrance to the inner areas.

Unarmed Guards Against Modern Threats
While terrorist groups today use advanced weapons, the security personnel here remain unarmed. They do not even carry a stick for self-defense, raising serious concerns about the safety of the dam.
Potential Disaster if a Terror Attack Occurs
If terrorists were to attack the dam, it could lead to a massive disaster for the entire state of Odisha. Despite this, the state government has not taken any significant steps to improve security.
OISF Commandant’s Response
Regarding the issue, OISF Assistant Commandant Dillip Nayak stated that he recently joined his position and acknowledged the lack of weapons. However, he assured that weapons would be provided in the future.
