Sambalpur: Shocking Negligence at DHH; Body Left in Freezer for a Month, Handed Over to Police Today

The Body has Decomposed

Sambalpur: A shocking case of negligence has been reported at Sambalpur’s District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). For more than a month, hospital officials and staff left a dead body in a freezer. When the freezer was opened today, the body was found decomposed. The police were notified, but identifying the deceased is now impossible because many parts of the body have decomposed, rendering fingerprint identification impractical. This negligence has prompted an investigation to determine who is responsible.

According to sources, the deceased was admitted to DHH on May 31 in critical condition and died on June 1st. The body was then placed in the hospital’s deep freezer. However, no information was provided to the police, so there was no post-mortem examination or steps taken to identify the body. When the freezer was opened today to store another body, the staff was shocked to see how decomposed the old body had become.

The police have stated that the DHH authorities did not notify them of the death, and they only learned of it today. The body’s identification has become difficult due to significant decomposition. Dr. Sujata Rani Mishra, District Chief Medical Officer, stated that they had informed the police following the death, which was confirmed by ADM and Dr. Alekh Mohapatra. However, the exact details of the incident are unknown and will be investigated further.

The incident raises a few questions: How did the hospital staff fail to notice the decomposing body? How will the identity of the unknown deceased be determined? Are the DHH officials liable for this negligence? The police are currently investigating the DHH authorities to find answers. They emphasize that they were not informed about the body, preventing them from taking the necessary steps to identify it.

The DHH authorities handed over the body to the police after completing a form and obtaining signatures, but no prior information about the incident was provided. This grave negligence has brought the DHH authorities under intense scrutiny, and the district police are holding them accountable for their actions.
