Tragic Death Due to Demolition
Sambalpur: A tragic incident unfolded during the removal of encroachments near Ainthapali National Highway in Sambalpur. Sanjay Kumar Sahu, a 44-year-old shopkeeper, passed away after suffering a heart attack. His poultry shop was demolished during the drive. Sanjay, the sole breadwinner of his family, left behind his wife, a 15-year-old daughter, and an 8-year-old son, rendering them completely helpless.
BJD Submits Compensation Demand
In response, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, demanding Rs. 50 lakh compensation for Sanjay’s family. They emphasized the family’s dire situation and called for justice.
Background of the Incident
On December 27, authorities conducted an anti-encroachment drive near Talichowk, Ainthapali. Despite prior identification of the land as private property by the Sadar Tehsil Office and confirmation in the report of the Land Acquisition Officer, the demolition proceeded. The High Court had earlier issued a stay order on demolishing structures on this land.

However, the market complex, including Sanjay’s poultry shop, was demolished. Following the destruction of his shop, Sanjay suffered a heart attack and was immediately taken to the District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
BJD’s Protest and Demand for Inquiry
Today, under the leadership of Mohammad Sanaulla, BJD leaders met Additional District Collector Sucharu Kumar Bal in the absence of the District Collector. They demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and immediate compensation for the bereaved family.
Prominent BJD leaders, including Gokul Meher, Benudhar Das, Pradeep Munda, Sahadev Munda, Rishi Munda, Priyabrata Mahapatra, Hardeep Singh Bhurji, Prafulla Das, Haraprasad Sahu, Ranjit Sharma, Bahadur Munda, Pradosh Mohanty, Anshuman Behera, and Satyendra Das, strongly supported the demand for justice and financial assistance for the affected family.
