Sambalpur: SMC Issues Notice to Return Ration Cards; Poor People to Lose Ration Cards After Providing Income Tax Certificates for Loans

Demolition of Shops and Ration Card Issues
Sambalpur: Two months after SMC demolished shops in Kirba Chowk, affected shop owners are now being asked to return their ration cards. A painter, who had applied for a loan with an income certificate of Rs. 3.5 lakh but never received it, is now being disqualified from the ration scheme. Similarly, Santanu Sahu, whose paan shop was demolished, also received a notice despite his worsened financial condition.
7,000 People Affected
SMC identified 1,900 ration cardholders and 7,000 family members with reported incomes above Rs. 3.5 lakh. Even those who applied for loans have been flagged. Many have voluntarily returned their cards, but some argue the action is unfair, especially after losing their livelihoods.

Ration Card Cancellation and Health Benefits
Affected families fear losing government health benefits along with their ration cards. SMC reviews only ineligible cases, but exempts disabled individuals, elderly beneficiaries, and critical patients.
400 Government Employees Identified
SMC has listed 400 government employees, including teachers, constables, and clerks, as ration cardholders. While no high-ranking officials were found, authorities are verifying all cases before cancellation.
The notices have sparked distress among families, with many feeling unfairly targeted. Authorities, however, emphasize a careful review process before taking action.
