Sambalpur: SMC Proposes for New Vending Zones at Sambalpur’s Dhobijor and Hirakud Colony Road
Rising Traffic Problems Due to Street Vendors
Sambalpur: The city currently lacks a proper market zone apart from Golbazar. Street vendors operate from roadside stalls, and to accommodate them, Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) has constructed small vending zones in limited areas. However, the growing population and the needs of residents have led to the proposal of a new vending zone at Dhobijor. Officials have submitted this proposal to higher authorities, which, if implemented, could provide a structured market similar to Golbazar.
Expanding Market Spaces
According to Municipal Commissioner Vedbhushan, SMC has taken steps to create additional vending zones throughout the city. In line with this initiative, they are exploring locations like Dhobijor, where a concrete vending zone is proposed. Additionally, plans are underway to construct another zone near Hirakud Colony Road. A part of the new Golbazar complex is also being considered for a structured market space.

Traffic Issues Worsen
Currently, Sambalpur faces severe traffic problems due to narrow roads, encroachments, and the congestion caused by roadside vendors. Satish Bisi, President of the Street Vendors Association, revealed that around 6,000 registered street vendors operate in the city. Farmers and traders from rural areas also set up temporary stalls along roadsides to sell goods, worsening the situation. Despite efforts by SMC to develop vending zones in various areas, many of these zones are not fully functional due to management issues.
Historical Perspective and Present Needs
Historically, major markets such as Golbazar and Kamlibazar were established during the British period to facilitate trade. However, no significant markets have emerged since then. Due to a lack of structured spaces, vendors are forced to occupy roadside areas, causing traffic jams.
A Way Forward
The proposal for new vending zones at Dhobijor and Hirakud Colony Road, if approved, promises to address several challenges. Local residents believe that these zones will not only help streamline traffic but also improve the livelihoods of vendors and provide convenient shopping spaces for citizens.
