Supreme Court Serves Notice to Baba Ramdev Over Misleading Advertising Claims
Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has been served a notice to appear in court by the Supreme Court of India following allegations of misleading advertising by his Ayurvedic company, Patanjali Ayurveda. The court issued the notice after a complaint was lodged accusing Patanjali of fraudulent advertising.
During a recent court hearing, Ramdev’s lawyer was questioned about the lack of a response to the allegations. As a result, Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurveda’s director, Acharya Balakrishna, have been ordered to appear in court in two weeks. The case will be reviewed again at that point.
This development comes after the Supreme Court previously ordered Ramdev and Balakrishna to answer to the claims within three weeks, which they appear to have ignored. As a result, the court has issued a contempt notice against both individuals.
The complaints against Patanjali Ayurveda include ads claiming that yoga can cure conditions including asthma and diabetes, which the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has disputed as false. PM Patwalia, IMA’s senior spokesperson, has filed a review petition with the Supreme Court to address these issues.
