Sambalpur: Union Minister Takes Historic Initiative for Tourism in Sambalpur; Hirakud, Mahanadi, and Debrigarh Transformation Plan Unveiled

Transforming Sambalpur into a Tourism Hub

Sambalpur: The central government has taken a historic step to boost tourism in Sambalpur, Odisha. A master plan has been introduced to transform Sambalpur into a global tourist destination by focusing on its natural beauty, water resources, and wildlife. This ambitious project will center around the Hirakud Dam, Mahanadi River, Debrigarh Sanctuary, and surrounding areas.

Nature and Economy to Flourish Together

This plan aims to enhance the region’s natural appeal while strengthening the local economy. By highlighting the scenic beauty and wildlife of the Hirakud region, Sambalpur will attract more visitors and achieve international recognition. Alongside tourism development, the project will also prioritize wildlife conservation and sustainable environmental practices.

Master Plan with a Rs. 5,000 Crore Investment

Initially, the project is estimated to require an investment of Rs. 5,000 crore, with provisions for additional funding as needed. The focus is on preserving the Mahanadi River, wetlands, and wildlife while promoting eco-tourism. A workshop held at the Hirakud Eco Retreat discussed strategies for sustainable tourism development.

Iconic Statue of Veer Surendra Sai in Sambalpur

Inspired by Gujarat’s Statue of Unity, Sambalpur will soon feature a monumental statue of Veer Surendra Sai, the legendary freedom fighter. Mukesh Puri, an expert behind the Statue of Unity, shared insights on overcoming challenges in building such iconic structures during the workshop.

Developing Mahanadi as a Tourist Attraction

Plans are underway to transform the Mahanadi River into an attractive tourist spot, similar to Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront. The Odisha government has already approved Rs. 100 crore for this initiative.

Collaboration for Success

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan led the discussions with senior officials from the central and state governments, including District Magistrates, SPs, and forest and water resources officers from Sambalpur, Bargarh, and Jharsuguda. Experts and officials explored ways to make Sambalpur a global tourist hotspot.

Comprehensive Planning and Execution

Tourism Commissioner Balwant Singh and Director Samarth Verma provided detailed insights during the discussions. The master plan includes measures to connect Sambalpur’s major attractions with nearby districts, ensuring holistic development.

Aiming for Global Recognition

The ultimate goal is to establish Sambalpur as an internationally renowned tourist city. The rich natural, cultural, and historical heritage of the region will be leveraged to create a unique tourism experience, rewriting the narrative of Sambalpur’s development.

This historic initiative marks a significant milestone in Odisha’s journey to becoming a global tourism destination.
