Sambalpur: Unique Initiative to Promote Sambalpuri Culture; All School Students Wear Sambalpuri Attire on Saturdays

Sambalpur: Sambalpuri textiles are popular not only in Odisha but also internationally. The demand for these traditional garments has skyrocketed in recent years. Various organizations and individuals are taking unique steps to promote Western Odisha’s culture, with the government also focusing on the cause.

Sambalpuri Attire in Schools

In keeping with this effort, a school in Maneswar block, Sambalpur district, has launched a special initiative in which all students wear Sambalpuri attire once a week. Every Saturday, instead of wearing the usual uniform, students dress in vibrant Sambalpuri clothing. Notably, this initiative is being implemented at Kids Planet Play School, where young children learn every day. While they usually wear uniforms, Saturdays have become a day for cultural expression, with students arriving at school dressed in colorful traditional attire.

Dress Code Details

The school has designed specific Sambalpuri attire for both boys and girls. Boys wear Sambalpuri shirts paired with black pants, while girls dress in Sambalpuri frocks. This initiative, which began in 2021 post-COVID, aims to promote local culture among the younger generation. It’s not only the students who participate—teachers and staff members also join in by wearing Sambalpuri clothing on Saturdays.

Emphasizing Cultural Awareness

The principal of the school emphasized the importance of introducing children to their regional heritage, stating that “Sambalpuri textiles are known worldwide.” It is critical that our students understand the value of these fabrics and their cultural significance at a young age.” She went on to say that by wearing Sambalpuri garments and learning about local folklore, songs, and traditions, the students will develop a stronger appreciation for their roots. The school hopes that by raising this awareness, children will be better able to promote and preserve their culture in the future.

Every Saturday, the entire school comes together, dressed in Sambalpuri attire, before starting their classes. The school administration believes that nurturing cultural knowledge in children from a young age will help them contribute to promoting the Sambalpuri heritage as they grow.
