Sambalpur: VSS Stadium Won’t Be Demolished, CM Mohan Majhi Announces New Stadium Construction in Sambalpur
Plans Revised by New Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi
Sambalpur: The government will not demolish the VSS Stadium in Sambalpur as previously planned to make way for a new international stadium. Former chief minister Naveen Patnaik had laid the groundwork for this project. However, the new Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, has canceled those plans. He has announced instead that the government will build a modern sports complex and a new stadium in Sambalpur, much to the delight of local sports fans.
Background and Revised Plans
On February 27, just days before the election model code of conduct took effect, then-Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid the groundwork for the complete reconstruction of VSS Stadium. The plan was to demolish the existing structure to make way for a larger, more advanced international-level stadium. V.K. Pandian, the former 5T secretary, had also announced the grand project.
However, after the change of government, the new administration, led by Chief Minister Majhi, reviewed the proposal. In response to public concerns, he stated that a new stadium would be built without demolishing the existing VSS Stadium. The new stadium will be built in a different location outside of the city.

“If I find a suitable 50-acre plot of land outside the city, I will build a new stadium there,” Majhi said in response to public concerns about the demolition of the VSS stadium. He went on to say that simply building a stadium or sports complex would not be enough to meet athletes’ needs, emphasizing the importance of incorporating a multi-sport facility into a comprehensive sports complex. He also assured that there would be no financial barriers to Sambalpur’s development, saying, “My government is ready to approve as much funding as necessary for this project.”
Local Sports Bodies Welcome the Decision
The Sambalpur District Sports Association welcomed the decision and expressed optimism about the region’s sporting future. The association’s secretary, Sunil Sahu, stated, “We had requested the new Chief Minister to ensure the construction of a modern stadium. His promise is a positive step for all sports enthusiasts.”
Sahu also announced the association’s plans to host the All India VSS Trophy Football Tournament, which will begin on the 28th of this month and bring players from all over the country to Sambalpur. He emphasized that the VSS Stadium must be renovated urgently before this event in order to provide adequate facilities for the athletes. Sahu urged the government and administration to upgrade the stadium’s infrastructure.
